A small town along the coast of Southern Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa was one of the first of Sri Lanka’s beaches to be discovered by tourists. The journey to Hikkaduwa is a short one, whether by train or bus. Upon reaching the town, it is best to travel to the beach by hailing a tuk tuk.

Along the shoreline is a 4 km stretch of hotels, restaurants, and pubs. Within this little town, there are plenty of activities and sights to enjoy. Swimming, surfing, and snorkelling are the best ways to pass time during the day. The clear blue sea is filled with darting fish and sea turtles. Simply by standing knee-deep in the sea, one can swim with the fish. The beautiful coral reef is visible and best seen at the Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary.

Glass bottom boats

Although Hikkaduwa is always bustling with visitors, it is not overcrowded, even during the peak season from November to March. As such, the beach is most welcoming for visitors who simply wish to relax by the sea. Boats with clear glass bottoms provide tours across the ocean, and there are many luxurious hotels with swimming pools.

Away from the shoreline lies the Hikkaduwa town, filled with the bustle of everyday life. Along the pavements, vendors sell clothes, souvenirs, and handmade jewellery. The Tsunami Museum is worth a visit, with a documentary of pictures depicting the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. The town has turtle farms and the Hikkaduwa National Park, which is a journey to Sri Lanka’s underwater world.

Undoubtedly, the best cuisine in Hikkaduwa is seafood. However, the long stretch of restaurants offers a wide variety of different foods to explore. Indeed, with its combination of beautiful seas, good food, and fun activities, travelling to Hikkaduwa is the perfect getaway.
