White Water Rafting


White water rafting is the perfect activity for water sports enthusiasts who live for adventure. The most popular spot for white water rafting in Sri Lanka is in Kitulgala. The rock-strewn stretch of the Kelani River in Kitulgala offers both major and minor rapids, and also proffers the most scenic sights to enhance your holistic adventure.

This tropical town is located in the hill country, about 80 km away from the commercial capital of Colombo, and can be accessed through the A7 main road. It is also a hub for bird-lovers, as it is home to a number of endemic species. White water rafting in Kitulgala covers a distance of about 5 km, with about five rapids of Grades 2 and 3. The best period for white water rafting is between May and December. If you want a heightened sense of adventure and euphoria, you can even go black rafting during the dead of the night. More experienced rafters can also raft through rapids of Grades 4 and 5 in Sitawaka and Gampola. 

Children have to be over six years old to participate in white water rafting. Average cost per person is about USD 30, and both amateurs and experienced rafters are guaranteed a euphoric experience through the major and minor rapids. 

Safety

During your adventure, you will be supervised by well-trained officials. Statistically, you’ll be safer in a raft than in your own car. Even those who can’t swim are welcome, and every rafter will be provided with a personal floatation device and other safety equipment. Avoid wearing clothing that will weigh you down and restrict movement.
